Disney Fan Made Theories!

transmedia-storytelling-1

Transmedia can be defined as the technique of telling a single story or story experience across multiple platforms and formats using current digital technologies. Henry Jenkins also adds “Transmedia storytelling represents a process where integral elements of a fiction get dispersed systematically across multiple delivery channels for the purpose of creating a unified and coordinated entertainment experience. Ideally, each medium makes it own unique contribution to the unfolding of the story.” This means that something has to be added to the story on each new platform is order for it to be true transmedia. Examples of this include background stories, changing perspectives of who is telling the story, focusing on a particular event and using it in a computer game etc.

This link, also provided as pre reading material, will take you to more in depth article about transmedia by academic Henry Jenkins. He discusses the layers of transmedia in very specific detail.

Transmedia Storytelling 101

An idea that is linked to this concept is the notion of fan made theories and conspiracies. One major corporation that has a huge following is Disney. There are hundreds of Disney theories out there that add to the stories of Disney, some Disney even agree to be true, when they may have never been intended at all. These theories add to the story and therefore become a part of transmedia. I have created a YouTube video of 5 fan made Disney theories.

Remixing

In music, Remixing can be defined by producing a different version of (a musical recording) by altering the balance of the separate tracks. According to E.Narvas “Remix is a cultural practice that includes reintroductions of pre-existing sources mixed together via the practice of cut/copy and paste.” Many artists will take parts of another song and chance things such as the speed, add instruments, take away instruments etc. A remix sometimes can end up sounding nothing like the original at all and instead producing a whole new song, however they still used part of another song. This can also be more specifically be known as remixing. Some clearly acknowledge that their song is a remix while others do not, which have previously led to legal battles.

Daft punk are one particular group that have apparantly sampled a lot of songs, to make up their album. I have created a prezi on 5 of their songs and where they have been sampled from. It is very interesting to see how they have sampled these older songs and made them into new songs, if you listen closely you can definitely hear the sample.

The following article also goes into further detail about Daft Punk and the use of sampling if you are interested in knowing more.

Random Rant: Daft Punk, Daft Plagiarists?

Here is a link to my pre reading for this weeks topic if you are interested in learning about remixing on a deeper and further academic level, this source is very detailed and discusses multiple layers of remixing.

A question we should ask ourself is whether anything really is original? Or is everything a remix. I believe that it is near impossible for things to be original, especially these days, everything is a remix. The artist will always have some inspiration from somewhere. Although it may be a remix, I do believe that this ofcourse, is still creative, creativity does not necessarily mean original.

Smartphones are one of the most used technologies around the world and have become extremely influential in our everyday lives, so much that we even have charging booths in shopping centres today. We base our furniture around power points so that we have easy access to charge our phones. We sit on our phones at dinner instead of talking to our family.

Technology can be an amazing tool but it also can be detrimental to our relationships with others. I cant even count the amount of times I have been out with someone and all they do is sit on their phone. It makes you feel ignored and unwanted. When Ted, my lecturer was talking about how in extremely high tech countries such as Korea have WiFi in nearly every public place and you can walk blocks without loosing connection, it really got me thinking. We are sooo dependent on our phones to the point that some would be unable to live without them.

I found these video’s online and they really affected me, it really shows just how much phones are taking over our lives and the things we miss out by being on them so much. My challenge for myself is to limit my technology use and get out and really live once in a while and spend some quality time with the people that I love.

Also thought this was a very interesting read as it visually shows the reader how smartphones have affected society!

Are people who illegally download burning the music industry?

https://prezi.com/hs72wnce0lbr/copy-of-explain-any-topic/#

Copyright is a very controversial issue that we are faced with in society, some agree with it, some don’t. A major issue that coincides with copyright is the act of illegally downloading music. Ive always believed that illegally downloading music has a massive impact on the industry however while I was researching I came across a study that argued that illegally downloading has no affect on the industry at all. For me this was a very interesting point because we are always bombarded by the media telling us exactly how bad it is! Perhaps this study may need to be done on a larger scale? Perhaps it is true? What are your thoughts?

I found this YouTube video extremely interesting, opinions in this video came directly from musicians and they argued that they felt exposure was more important then piracy and that even if people did pirate their songs it would give them exposure to their songs and potentially encourage them to attend live shows and buy merchandise!

I personally, believe copyright should exist and we should pay for what we use, however to an extent. In my BCM112 lecture, my lecturer Ted, made some very interesting points that I was shocked to learn. The sounds of animals such as cats and birds have now been copyrighted. This is copyright to the extreme and does not allow for any creative expression washout worrying of the consequences. These are sounds of nature and certainly shouldn’t be marked as copyright for someone to make money off!

The medium is the message?

memmee

Accurate.

Whilst reading through the pre reading for my BCM112 lecture week I was quite confused with what I was presented with. A new concept, a foreign term I had never heard before. To be honest it kind of scared me and I contemplated if this was really the subject for me because I just could not wrap my head around the concept. What exactly was this the “medium is the message”? I came into the lecture feeling nervous and quickly consulted other students and asked them if they knew what the heck was going on, some did, some didn’t. Glad some could relate, scared some couldn’t. Despite my skeptical thoughts, this weeks BCM112 lecture was quite mentally stimulating for me. The last week i have been stressing about what is was that I was going too for my digital artifact, and most importantly how in the world it was going to relate to this so called the media is the message concept but after the lecture I gained the clarity I needed and I finally understood “The medium is the message” concept. Once I understood this, I found this idea by Marshall McLuhan quite interesting! I found it quite intriguing that McLuhan argued its not necessary the content but the way it is presented that we should be aware of! For example its not the content of our phones that we should be looking at but the phones themselves and how it has completely changed and reshaped the way our society runs, even down to the way we set up our rooms surrounding power points.

I found this video very stimulating aswell and it helped me to understand exactly what the medium is the message was.
